I’m going to help simplify it for you.
I’m going to give some cost estimates and examples for interior painting, exterior painting, and deck & fence staining. This is for repaints only, and does not reflect pricing for new construction homes.
These are rough estimates to give you a ball park and are meant to be a guide. If you are looking to hire a painting company, one of the best ways to make sure you are getting a good price is to get multiple estimates from local painters through a service like Painter Choice.

Painting the whole interior is much more expensive than painting the whole exterior. There’s a lot more detail work and surface to paint on the interior.
Most of your interior estimates will be for walls, ceiling, and trim. Here’s how to price it, depending on what the customer is asking for:
Walls Only: $1.75-$2.75 per square foot
Walls, Ceilings, Trim: $3.00-$4.00 per square foot
Example costs using a 2500 square foot house:
Walls Only: $4,375-$6,875
Walls, Ceilings, and Trim: $7,500-$10,000

Exterior painting requires less detail than interior. Your costs mainly just depend on how many stories the house has. Here are some price ranges to go by for exterior projects:
One Story Ranch: $2,000-$5,000
Two Story: $2,700-$6,500
Three Story: $3,600-$8,500
*These do not take into consideration detailed Victorian style homes, or lead safe practices if required. (Keep reading for more on this)

Painting a deck or a fence is pretty straight forward. Most of these jobs will just have surface and railings to take into consideration.
6 Foot Stained Fence: $1.50-$4.00 per square foot
Deck Surface: $1.00-$2.00 per square foot
Deck Railings: $8.00-$12.00 per linear foot
